    Thank you, Graciela. Yes, because the human condition comes down to human biology it is ultimately a question for scientists to answer. As Jeremy Griffith stresses in Part 2 of THE Interview, finding the answer to the human condition ultimately depended on being able to explain our biology: “while it has been recognised—even from ancient times—that the emergence of our conscious mind somehow caused us to ‘fall from grace’, or however you want to describe the corruption of our original innocent cooperative, selfless and loving instinctive state, it wasn’t until science revealed the difference between the gene-based and nerve-based learning systems—which is that genes can orientate but nerves need to understand—that we were finally in a position to explain the good reason for our angry, egocentric and alienated human condition.”     To their credit, however, while religions could not account for the evolution of our species, religious scripture does contain all manner of truths about the story of humanity and human life, albeit delivered in pre-scientific rhetoric. What Jeremy has done is bring that aforementioned first principle-based scientific understanding to those concepts; for instance, he explains that the prophet Moses went as close as you could possibly go in those pre-scientific times to actually explain the human condition when he said “we took the fruit from the tree of knowledge [became conscious] and were disobedient [obviously meaning we developed a conscious free will that defied our already established instincts that had been controlling our lives] and became perpetrators of sin [sufferers of psychologically upset, divisive behaviour]”. Hi Cassandra, the change from living in denial of our corrupted condition to being able to face and heal it does represent a massive paradigm shift, but once people gain an appreciation for how all-clarifying, all-reconciling and all-liberating this knowledge is the transformation and healing happens quickly — as you can see from the ecstatic responses at the top of our homepage! What is challenging is breaking through the historic fear we understandably have to discussion of the human condition and also the resistance humans have to change (see The Great Guilt presentation which follows THE Interview in our Main Videos). So, as mentioned in our response to Glenn below, it will take time to implement the change universally but once this information gets a foothold through enough people developing a deep appreciation and desire to support it all the distress in the world will subside and the world will heal.

As with any new scientific breakthrough in history, it will take time for people to realise that this is the breakthrough we’ve all been waiting for, but as support and momentum continues to build, the selfless love and energy it generates will solve our problems very quickly. THE Interview is replete with examples of thinkers throughout history who have touched on elements of the human condition in their thinking, however ultimately we needed to find the scientific explanation for why when the universal ideals are to be loving, cooperative and selfless are we so angry, competitive and selfish. Answering this question required finding the clarifying difference between the way the intellect and instincts work, and that is the great biological breakthrough Jeremy Griffith presents here. So it is not correct to suggest that what is being presented here is a “quick fix” based on “only believing we are good” because what is presented here is not a ‘faith’ or ‘belief’, but rational understanding of why we are good. In fact, it was only through understanding the dark side of ourselves could we free ourselves from the human condition and legitimately and truly compassionately love ourselves and each other again; could we be made ‘whole’. As Carl Jung famously said, ‘wholeness for humans depends on the ability to own their own shadow’. This is the critical difference between Jeremy’s work and the new age movement – see FAQ 6.5. Yes, that’s right Shona, we can now understand that the story of Adam and Eve is a metaphor for the emergence of the conscious mind in the prescence of pre-established cooperative and loving instincts. As Jeremy explains in THE Interview, “The Biblical story of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden that Moses wrote so long ago in about 1,500 BC actually perfectly describes the psychologically upsetting battle that emerged between our instincts and conscious intellect. It says Adam and Eve/​we humans took the ‘fruit’ ‘from the tree of knowledge’ and were ‘disobedient’. In other words, we developed a conscious mind and free will. But in that pre-scientific story it says Adam and Eve then became ‘evil’ perpetrators of ‘sin’ because they became angry, egocentric and alienated, and as a result Moses said they were ‘banished…​from the Garden of Eden’ state of cooperative and loving innocence.” But as is explained, Adam and Eve (which again, is a metaphor for us humans) are actually not just good but the heroes of the whole story of life on Earth.

We suggest the more you absorb what is presented in THE Interview the more you will realise that all humans suffer from a universal psychosis, caused by the clash between our instinct and intellect. Certainly this manifests in a multitude of different ways, but that is to be expected because everyone has had a different exposure to the human condition, whether it is through how they were nurtured, or their exposure to upset in the world as a whole, but the macro truth is that we are all insecure about our self-worth, and at its source, the cause of this is the instinct vs intellect clash. Which is why the highly respected psychiatrist Professor Harry Prosen, a former President of the Canadian Psychiatric Association, wrote: “the beauty of Griffith’s treatise is that the healing starts at the macro level of the universal human condition; the healing of the shame and blame that the whole human race has suffered from…It brings the greater context and love to all human psychosis and suffering, and then, from under the umbrella of that safe position, everyone can gradually work inwards to their particular experience of all the imperfections in human life that have now, finally, been made sense of.”

What is so utterly exonerating and psychologically healing about our ability to now understand this is that we can finally appreciate that there was a very good reason—indeed heroic reason—for such dark volcanic forces in us humans. Importantly, this understanding of why we became upset as a species does not condone or sanction such extremes of ‘psychologically upset’ behaviour, rather, through bringing understanding to it, it gives us the power to ameliorate and thus subside and ultimately eliminate it, see our FAQ 1.38.

Great to have your interest, Carrie. Yes, it is astonishing to finally have the human condition solved, our existence made sense of and be able to legitimately return to our natural loving state. To do this science had to answer the the crux question of why when the universal ideals are to be loving and selfless are we so competitive and selfish? This is what Jeremy Griffith has answered with his ‘instinct vs intellect’ explanation and why it is heralded as the biological breakthrough that can save the world (FAQ 6.5 explains the critical difference between Jeremy’s work and the New Age Movement).

Part 4 of THE Interview, titled ‘How does the psychological rehabilitation of the human race that the arrival of understanding of the human condition finally makes possible actually occur?’, does answer the question of ‘how will this happen?’ It explains it will take a number of generations for the upset within us to be completely healed but it also stresses importantly we can be immediately free of its affects. At last we can understand our behaviour has been driven by a deep insecurity about our fundamental goodness or worth and so now that our goodness is biologically established we no longer have to behave insecurely and selfishly and can legitimately return to a selfless way of living. ‘Legitimately’ because we have the first principle science which liberates us to be honest about our conflicted upset state instead of denying or transcending it. So instead of being focused on power, fame, fortune and glory, all our energies will be freed to truly work together on doing whatever it takes to end the suffering and save our world. A very basic human understanding.

    Thank you for your thoughts Danny. No this is not new age teachings. Jeremy Griffith presents first-principle-based rational, testable, biological understanding of the human condition. It is not one of those ‘stop-thinking’, ‘mindless’, dogma-based, ‘new age’ false starts to a new world for humans that can’t and doesn’t last. We humans are conscious beings, we needed brain food not brain anaesthetic; see FAQ 6.5.     In terms of Christianity and Christ, Jeremy does consider the Bible to be a repository of extremely rare denial-free truth, containing all the truth about human life albeit from that pre-science view (see our FAQs about religion), and he has written about Christ’s life and its phenomenal importance in humanity’s journey in Freedom Essay 39.

Thanks for your comment Rod. What is so extraordinary about Jeremy Griffith’s biological treatise is that it logically and accountably defends human selfishness and denial of the truth. And it is only with that defence of our ‘dark side’, through finding the good reason that we had to defy our instincts, that we can reconcile ourselves with our soul or instinctive self and behave truly selflessly, because all our defensive behaviours (our anger, egocentricity and alienation) are now redundant. We no longer need them because we have the real defense for why we had to defy our instincts!     Hi Franck, the very nature of the human condition means discussion of it can be initially difficult to access. As THE Interview explains this is because historically the issue of whether we are fundamentally good or bad has been the most terrifying of all subjects to face, and so we have necessarily lived in almost total denial of it, which means our minds can initially struggle to hear and absorb discussion about it. Hi Jagat, we suggest you watch THE Interview again as it will become clear that Jeremy Griffith’s work is not an idealistic plea for us to just behave idealistically. In fact it is the complete opposite. As THE Interview stresses we no longer have to believe we are good we can 100% be certain we are as our fundamental goodness is biologically established! This is what is so significant about what Jeremy’s ‘instinct vs intellect’ explanation of the human condition. It explains the very good reason that our intellect had to defy our instincts and become psychologically upset or ‘unideal’ and having found that understanding means all our defensive behaviours (our anger, egocentricity and alienation) are now redundant. Yes Katarzyna THE Interview is very revealing. Jeremy Griffith’s ‘instinct vs intellect’ treatise explains how our emerging conscious mind came into conflict with our preestablished loving instincts, making us psychologically upset. You might be interested in chapter 8:16C of Jeremy’s definitive book FREEDOM, which explains in greater detail about the absolute importance of nurturing, and how if it is compromised, it creates destructive behaviour in subsequent generations. Of course, as Jeremy writes in that chapter, it is not parents fault; they, like everyone else, have been dealing with the human condition. Jeremy writes: “Parents can now understand that their inability to adequately love their offspring is not their fault, but the product of the ever-accumulating levels of upset in the human race as a whole that resulted from our species’ heroic 2-million-year search for knowledge, specifically for self-knowledge, understanding of why we conscious humans are good and not bad.”

There is a lot to digest here Manidipa, one aspect of which is that while the ‘search for knowledge’ is the ultimate source of humanity’s psychological upset, it is a compounding situation whereby the upset from that original source accumulates in the world, thereby adversely effecting subsequent generation, causing even more psychological upset, or ‘mental health issues’, and so on. As Jeremy Griffith explains in paragraph 73 of his book Death by Dogma, in addition to the psychological upset caused by the search for knowledge, “The second, and by far the greatest reason for the increase in upset that has occurred from generation to generation is the soul-destroying influence of the existing levels of upset in your society from all the upsetting searching for knowledge that has taken place before you arrived in the world. Each generation is born expecting to encounter the all-loving and all-sensitive world we humans originally lived in, and the more upset/soul-corrupted the world we actually encounter is, the more bewildered, hurt and damaged our soul became by that encounter…So growing up now in a world that is already horrendously upset means that by far the greatest reason for the upset in our lives is the effects of encountering all that upset when we were infants and children.”

Yes, Nietzsche was an ever-insightful honest thinker, and pointed the way to the biological explanation of our ‘egocentricity’ and the human condition when he recognised that, unlike other animals, humans have had to fight a psychological demon, the human condition. To quote his much acclaimed book Thus Spoke Zarathustra: A Book for Everyone and No One: “Man, however, is the most courageous animal: with his courage he has overcome every animal. With a triumphant shout he has even overcome every pain; human pain, however, is the deepest pain” (see FREEDOM ch 8:11B). Ultimately we needed to find the scientific explanation for this ‘deepest pain’, the pain of not being able to know whether humans were fundamentally evil beings or not. While humans do still possess very primitive reflexes, such as for ‘fight or flight’, beneath our altruistic, unconditionally selfless instincts (acquired through the process of love-indoctrination, see Freedom Essay 21), these primitive reflexes do not control our behaviour beyond very narrow scenarios or threats. The truth is that our angry, competitive and egocentric behaviour is not instinctive in any way; it is the result of a psychosis. Essentially, as is explained in THE Interview, the popular contention that selfish and aggressive behaviour is a manifestation of survival or selfish instincts was just a convenient excuse while we searched for the psychosis-addressing-and-solving real explanation of our divisive behaviour.
