Fossil remains of A. afarensis (right side) match up remarkably well with the bones of a pygmy chimpanzee (left side). The main differences are that A. afarensis has larger teeth and a bipedal rather than quadrupedal pelvis. Size comparison is made with modern man H. sapiens sapiens outlined at rear. Drawing by Adrienne L. Zihlman.
