Jeremy Griffith’s work doesn’t ignore, exclude or contradict a belief in God, or Christianity. It simply brings biological understanding to all those pre-scientific concepts. In fact, Jeremy considers the Bible to be a repository of extremely rare denial-free truth, containing all the truth about human life albeit from a pre-science view. Although this is science, it is based on a ‘Godly’ nature in the sense of recognising, like all the great religions do, that we humans once lived in a pre-human-condition-afflicted state of original innocence where we were perfectly instinctively orientated to the cooperative, selfless, loving, ‘Godly’ ideals of life; ‘God’ being explained as being the personification of integrative meaning of life; see Freedom Essay 23. As you digest this understanding, we suggest you will begin to see that what is unique about Jeremy Griffith’s work is that he has answered the essential question of why, when the universal ideals are to be integrative are we so disintegrative? Our endeavours in philosophy, psychology and biology have failed, until now, to provide a truthful, real, fully accountable, genuinely clarifying explanation. Answering this question required finding the clarifying difference between the way the intellect and instincts work, and that is the great biological breakthrough Jeremy presents here. Steven, there is a lot to digest here, but we hope you persevere, because what is so significant about the explanation of the human conditon is that this understanding defends our so-called ‘dark side’ and explains that despite all appearances to the contrary, all humans are ‘good’. And paradoxically, by explaining the very good reason why our intellect had to defy our instincts, it makes redundant our defensive behaviours of anger, egocentricity and alienation, allowing us to end the perpetuation of our destructive behaviour!

The human condition manifests in different ways in all as a result of our own experiences and exposure to the world, but the clash between instinct and intellect is the source of all our insecurity and subsequent anger, egocentricity and alienation, and so explaining it makes all those defensive behaviours redundant. We suggest you read the very brief summary in FAQ 1.3 and then re-watch THE Interview. Also watching the video series that follows THE Interview is great as that series elaborates on what’s been presented — so there’ll be some repetition, but going over the concepts in more detail does help with the understanding and absorption of them. FAQ 1.16 is also recommended because it explains our historic fear of the subject of the human condition and the resulting ‘deaf effect’ that often initially causes.     We are animals, and we are great apes, but what sets us apart from the other great apes is that we are fully conscious. And so to find the source of our unique insecure, egocentric, alienated behaviour, it only makes sense that we look to our consciousness for the reason, not our instincts. And what you find when you digest Jeremy Griffith’s ‘instinct vs intellect’ explanation of the human condition, is that the source of our negative traits is not instincts, but our psychologically upset state, which was the unavoidable result of a clash between our pre-established instincts and emerging conscious mind. Jeremy explains in THE Interview that without this defence for our upset state we have sought to falsely blame our behaviour on ‘savage instincts’ within us.     Even within the great ape family, there is clear evidence that our negative behaviour is not instinctual. While bonobos have not yet completed the process of love-indoctrination, they are extraordinarily gentle and cooperative. In chapter 5:5 of his book FREEDOM, Jeremy Griffith includes an analysis of the hominin fossil record (particularly Ardipithecus) that evidences that on the basis of physique, intelligence, small canines, bipedality the bonobos present a very accurate model of our human ancestors, leading. Chapter 5 also includes an analysis of the hominin fossil record and how attributes such as small canines evidence humans peaceful past, leading the prominent anthropologist C. Owen Lovejoy to write that “our species-defining cooperative mutualism can now be seen to extend well beyond the deepest Pliocene [well beyond 5.3 mya]”.     And so if we had a cooperative past, which the evidence says we did, our selfish, aggressive behaviour can’t be instinctive; it has to be psychological in origin, and a psychosis is changeable as it can be healed through understanding.

Thank you for your profound thoughts Joeb. It is very true that our inability to forgive ourselves for our imperfection is at the heart of the human condition - we carry ‘a burden of guilt’ that we spend our lives trying to overcome. We think what you will find as you digest this scientific understanding is that it doesn’t contradict a belief in God or Christianity, or the Bible’s content. It simply brings biological understanding to all those pre-scientific concepts. For example, while religious assurances, such as ‘God loves you’ in Christianity, provided comfort, they failed to explain WHY we are lovable, and it is that missing explanation that this breakthrough provides. And significantly, by bringing biological understanding to pre-scientific concepts it at last reconciles science and religion. And rather than threatening religions, what people discover is it is the fulfilment of a time that all the great prophets looked forward to when we could actually explain ourselves (see our FAQs about religion especially FAQ 6.3 ‘Does this undermine religion’).

    Thank you George. Certainly many people have recognised the alienation of modern society, but what is unique about Jeremy Griffith’s treatise is that it confronts and biologically explains why we became so “self-destructive”. Simply demanding modern humans undertake a “Great Turning” back to their original “natural instincts and collective thought and community living” was a false start to a human-condition-free world – was what could be described as ‘pseudo idealistic’ – because the upsetting battle to find knowledge, ultimately self-knowledge, the psychologically relieving understanding of why we are good and not bad, still had to be completed. FAQ 6.5 further explains this critical difference.     It also needs to be explained that even though so called-primitive or indigenous peoples are relatively innocent compared with other ethnic groups, all humans are now part of the extremely upset stage of humanity, H. sapiens sapiens, and are therefore nowhere near as innocent as humans were some 2 million years ago when the battle of the human condition first emerged. With the explanation of the human condition we can now understand that despite the differing levels of upset due to everyone’s different encounters with humanity’s heroic battle to find knowledge, we are all equally good – that is the key and significant point being made. Hi Selina, thank you for your thoughts. Thoughout his work biologist Jeremy Griffith does address the issue of hormones, for instance see Freedom Essay 14, saying that it’s not our hormones that have caused our psychological upset, regardless of our age. While testorone levels may affect how our upset is expressed or even amplified, our fundamental upset personality or state is the result of what Jeremy has explained in THE Interview which is summarised in FAQ 1.3. As Professor Harry Prosen says in FAQ 1.34, “While we can expect instances of neurochemical/neurobiological based conditions, in my experience we can’t underestimate how much our psychology affects our biology. What Griffith is presenting is understanding of the source insecurity that the whole human race suffers from for having destroyed our species’ innocent soul. It is a universal self-blame that his understanding at last provides healing insight into.”

We suggest you need to look deeper Kut because, as THE Interview explains, the question of our ‘good and evil’-stricken human condition—of WHY don’t humans love unconditionally—desperately needs to be confronted and answered for us to truly live in harmony with ourselves and the planet. Just being willing to love unconditionally is not understanding the problem at all. Only solving the human condition can stop the disintegration of society and the destruction of our world that is happening everywhere we look. This is what Jeremy Griffith has done and is what is unique about his work. He has scientifically answered the age-old question of why when the universal ideals are to be loving, cooperative and selfless are we so angry, competitive and selfish, so much so that we are destroying ourselves and our world. Yes it has Pam and at last we know the very good reason why and have the solution to be able to legitimately return to our original empathetic state. As Jeremy Griffith explains in this interview all humans are born with all-loving, moral ‘empathetic’ instincts but we now suffer from a universal psychosis caused by the clash between our instinct and intellect. We became psychologically upset and alienated from our original selfless state because of our conscious mind’s necessary, and indeed heroic, search for knowledge. As Part 4 of THE Interview reveals now that we can explain and understand this conflict and the guilt it produced, all those insecure, defensive behaviours are obsoleted, brought to an end, and we free ourselves from the human condition. THE Interview presents biologist Jeremy Griffith’s thesis that all humans variously suffer from the human condition—a universal psychosis caused by a clash between our instinct and intellect. Yes, “Knowledge Is Power” and the ultimate knowledge humans have always sought has been that of self-understanding, of ‘why, when the ideals are to be loving and selfless, are we so competitive and selfish?’, which Jeremy Griffith has achieved by clarifying the difference between the way the intellect and instincts work; that is the great breakthrough his work represents — and through bringing compassionate understanding to the source of humans’ upset behaviour, it gives us the “power” to ameliorate and thus subside and ultimately eliminate it.     Regarding politics, Jeremy’s work opens up a new way of thinking so it takes a little time to fully absorb this new paradigm and our human condition does present the ultimate paradox. His biological ‘instinct vs intellect’ explanation of the human condition allows us to understand the real merits and liabilities of both the left and right wing. His work certainly doesn’t excuse the right-wing for its corrupting behaviour, nor unfairly focus on the failing of the left, which is that its insistence on ideal behaviour had the effect of oppressing and thus regressing, not progressing, the search for knowledge, but rather brings a profound understanding to both sides which ultimately will bring an end to the whole ugly business of politics. THE Interview explains all humans are born with loving moral instincts but we all now variously suffer from a psychosis due to the human condition and, in the extreme, that psychologically conflicted upset state produces psychopathic behaviour. Importantly, this breakthrough explanation doesn’t condone or sanction the horrendous atrocities humans can commit (what historically has been termed ‘evil’) rather, through bringing compassionate understanding to the source of humans’ upset behaviour, it gives us the power to ameliorate and thus subside and ultimately eliminate it.     Hi Terence, as THE Interview explains, the human condition has been the most terrifying of subjects to face because it is the issue of whether we are fundamentally good or bad as a species, and we have necessarily lived in almost total denial of it so there is a lot to consider and digest which takes time. For a further brief introduction to what the human condition is, we recommend our FAQ 1.1, ‘What is the human condition?’, in which it is explained that “while it’s undeniable that humans are capable of great love, we also have an unspeakable history of brutality, rape, torture, murder and war. Despite all our marvellous accomplishments, we humans have been the most ferocious and destructive force that has ever lived on Earth—and the eternal question has been ‘why?’ Even in our everyday behaviour, why have we humans been so competitive, selfish and aggressive when clearly the ideals of life are to be the complete opposite, namely cooperative, selfless and loving? In fact, why are we so ruthlessly competitive, selfish and brutal that human life has become all but unbearable and we have nearly destroyed our own planet?! The agony of being unable to truthfully answer this fundamental question of why we are the way we are—divisively instead of cooperatively behaved—has been the particular burden of human life.
