Yes, as Jeremy Griffith explains in chapter 1.3 of his definitive book FREEDOM, the story of Don Quixote, including the amazing lyrics from Man of La Mancha, perfectly capture the heroisim of the human condition. As Jeremy writes, "Joe Darion’s fabulous lyrics of the song The Impossible Dream, which featured in the 1965 musical about Don Quixote, Man of La Mancha, perfectly describes the unbelievably courageous and heroic participation in humanity’s corrupting search for knowledge by every human who has ever lived during the last 2 million years, which Don Quixote’s story personifies: ‘To dream the impossible dream [of one day, in the far future (which has now arrived), finding the redeeming understanding of the human condition], to fight the unbeatable foe [of our ignorant instincts], to bear the unbearable sorrow, to run where the brave dare not go. To right the unrightable wrong [of being unjustly criticised], to love pure and chaste from afar, to try when your arms are too weary, to reach the unreachable star. This is my quest, to follow that star, no matter how hopeless, no matter how far. To fight for the right without question or pause, to be willing to march into hell for a heavenly cause. And I know if I will only be true, to this glorious quest, that my heart will lie peaceful and calm, when I’m laid to my rest. And the world will be better for this, that one man scorned and covered with scars, still strove with his last ounce of courage, to reach the unreachable star.’"

Yes, and no knowledge is more empowering than understanding of the human condition. We have been fighting our way forward, every step bedevilled by the fear that we might be worthless, a blight on the planet. But humanity heroically persevered in its great journey to find knowledge, ultimately self-knowledge, the scientific explanation for why, when the universal ideals are to be loving, cooperative and selfless are we so angry, competitive and selfish. It is explained that our instinctive self in effect criticised the conscious mind when it went in search of knowledge. This criticism caused the conscious mind to become insecure, and eventually defensive. We recommend FAQ 1.41 ‘What are instincts and what is consciousness, and how do they differ?’, in which it is explained that “natural selection has given animals genetic programming, ‘instincts’, to control and orientate all this movement and behaviour”, and FAQ 1.42 ‘If our instincts are loving and cooperative why would they criticise the conscious mind when it began experimenting with different behaviour?’ in which it is explained that, “cooperative, selfless, loving moral instincts are, like any other instincts, rigid and dictatorial in the sense that they are ‘unalterable…response[s] to environmental stimuli’; they cannot assess behaviour that deviates from their programming and ‘tolerate’ it—that would be an insightful response, and instincts respond to ‘stimuli without involving reason’. And so when the conscious mind’s experiments in self-management resulted in behaviour that was not loving and cooperative, our loving and cooperative instincts automatically resisted that deviation and tried to ‘pull’ us back in line with their naturally selected orientation—they in effect criticised the conscious mind’s experiments in self-management.”

Yes, the human condition, which is the astronomical guilt we all carry for having destroyed our original all-loving, innocent state, has historically been a terrifying subject – it has been “threatening”! (you might be interested in watching or reading Jeremy’s presentation, The Great Guilt, which explains just how off-limits a subject the human condition has been). However, now that our upset, corrupted state has been explained and defended, we can now safely approach this subject, and most wonderfully, by explaining the very good reason why our intellect had to defy our instincts, our defensive behaviours of anger, egocentricity and alienation are made redundant. We are certainly in critical need of a deeper understanding of ourselves so we can put an end to all the unthinkable suffering and disintegration of society that is happening everywhere we look. We suggest that the more people digest Jeremy Griffith’s ‘instinct vs intellect’ explanation, the more they realise that it is not just accountable in getting to the source of all humanity’s psychological upset, but how, because it is a compassionate understanding, even the most angry and power hungry will see that they are being defended, not criticised, and so will embrace the understanding, which is why it will ameliorate and thus subside and ultimately eliminate ‘upset’ everywhere (see FAQ 1.38 ‘Aren’t some people just born psychopathic, or even ‘evil’? / How does this explanation rehabilitate people capable of ‘evil’ behaviour? / Does this condone ‘evil’ behaviour?’).     In terms of how, as Part 4 of THE Interview, titled ‘How does the psychological rehabilitation of the human race that the arrival of understanding of the human condition finally makes possible actually occur?’ explains it will take a number of generations for the upset within us to be completely healed but it also stresses importantly we can be immediately free of its effects. Certainly there is habituation to overcome and humans do find change difficult but now that our goodness is biologically established we no longer have to behave insecurely and selfishly and can legitimately return to a selfless way of living. ‘Legitimately’ because we have the first principle science which liberates us to be honest about our conflicted upset state instead of denying or transcending it. So instead of being focused on power, fame, fortune and glory, all our energies will be freed to truly work together on doing whatever it takes to end the suffering and save our world. While the fundamental explanation is very simple and easy to understand it does open up the historically off-limits subject of the human condition so it is common people initially struggle to ‘hear’ what is being explained (see FAQ 1.16). So while it may take time for everyone to access this breakthrough everyone will eventually hear it and take it up. To quote WTM Freedom Essay 5 about the transformation and freedom this understanding brings us: “Really, the transformation of the world is already a fait accompli, a certainty—sure, it will take a little time to get started, but what will win the day is logic. It’s great you are finding this understanding insightful and compelling Steve but it does take a little time to fully grasp how it transforms humanity. As Part 2 of THE Interview stresses, this instinct vs intellect explanation of the human condition makes sense of and reconciles all the unresolved manifestations of the polarities of the human situation—including politics. For instance Jeremy Griffith’s explanation allows us to understand the real merits and liabilities of both the left and right wing. His work certainly recognises the destructive brutality of the right-wing; indeed he brings understanding to the whole extremely destructive angry, egocentric and alienated human condition. He also recognises the failing of the Left, which is that its dogmatic insistence on cooperative, selfless and loving behaviour stifled and oppressed the freedom of expression and individualism needed to find knowledge, ultimately self-knowledge, the redeeming understanding of our seemingly destructive human condition that thankfully he has now found and presents in his book FREEDOM. Basically his work brings profound understanding to both sides, which ultimately brings to an end the whole ugly business of politics. This is fully explained in our FAQs about politics. What biologist Jeremy Griffith explains in this interview is that our uncivilized or destructive behaviour is not driven by what we have been taught or conditioned to believe and our protection of that but rather a universal psychosis, caused by the clash between our instinct and intellect. And, significantly, a psychosis is changeable as it can be healed through understanding. Hi David, if you are saying you don’t think THE Interview presents a full explanation, while great care has been taken to present the explanation as quickly and simply as possible (which is done in Part 1), opening up the underlying issue in all human affairs of the human condition does mean that there are several absolutely critical questions to be answered, which make up Parts 2, 3 & 4 of THE Interview. However, FAQ 1.3 presents a very brief summary of the key ‘instinct vs intellect’ concept. We hope you find this reply helpful.

As Jeremy explains in Part 4 of THE Interview, “while it will take a number of generations to heal all the upset in us humans, everyone can immediately live free of their upset. The reason we can live free of it is that while we lacked the real defence and reinforcement of understanding of our corrupted condition, we absolutely needed the artificial defences and reinforcements of attacking any criticism of our corrupted condition, of denying and blocking it out, and of finding any positive reinforcement we could—anger, alienation and egocentricity are what sustained us—but now that we have the real defence and reinforcement of our fundamental goodness, all these artificial defences and reinforcements are obsoleted, they are no longer needed.” You can read more about the immediate transformation this understanding makes possible in FAQ 4.1.

Finally

We suggest reading chapter 4 of Jeremy Griffith’s definitive book FREEDOM, which explains how, while we couldn’t defend our psychologically upset divisive state, mechanistic science has not been able to admit that evolution is an integrative process, instead trying to say it was random. People intuitively know that there is more to life than that, and so they have refused to believe it, instead putting their faith in Creationism or so called Intelligent Design, which is what Duane Gish does. However, with the human condition explained, we can now see evolution in its full integrative context. There is good reason that this understanding of the human condition is described as redeeming, reconciling and rehabilitating, and this is just one example, showing how it reconciles science and religion, see also FAQ 6.3.

We suggest that now we can understand the human condition, we can see that everyone has suffered from it, meaning that all our institutions, including our governments, and our leaders, have all been manifestations of our insecure, psychologically upset condition. With regard to “Controllers of the World”, as the commedian George Carlin said, “If you have selfish, ignorant citizens, you’re going to get selfish, ignorant leaders.” So our leaders are really just us. And so this redeeming understanding of the human condition brings peace to everyone, even those in power. And it won’t be long until everyone gets on board, because staying in a psychological jail any longer than you have to, no matter how much power and riches you have, just doesnt' compare to being psychologically free, and that excitement is going to be completely contagious, particularly as momentum starts to build. Certainly it will take time for this transformation to occur (less than you may think: once this catches on, it will spread like wildfire, such is the liberation and joy it generates), and so old enmities will linger for a while, but having this understanding puts everyone in a better position to manage those enmities until they do subside. For those who understand this redeeming explanation, ego and insecurity will no longer be a part of their equation - and so they will be in the best possible position to manage situations to bring about the best outcome for the world. Having understanding of the human condition is incredibly empowering. And again, it won’t be long until everyone gets on board, because staying in a psychological jail any longer than you have to really is crazy, and everyone will see that, particularly as momentum starts to build.     You can know that Jeremy Griffith has at last got to the bottom of the human condition and found the redeeming explanation of it, because as he explains in paragraph 73 of FREEDOM, the ultimate test of any hypothesis is how accountable it is of our own lives – as the greatest of all physicists, Albert Einstein, once said that ‘truth is what stands the test of experience’. And so you can know that this is the breakthrough explanation of the human condition because once you understand the explanation and begin to apply it, you will discover it is so able to make sense of human behaviour it makes it transparent. This transparency of ourselves and our world — for example, the exposure of all our falseness—that this understanding of the human condition brings, is the ultimate ‘test of experience’ that confirms that the understanding being presented here is the long-sought explanation of the human condition. Yes Hubert, as Jeremy Griffith stresses in his work, religion has contained all manner of truth about the human condition, albeit without the benefit of science. While we are not overly familiar with the Mormon Church I have heard that there is a recognition that Adam and Eve were not sinful, but trying to fulfil a great purpose in eating from the tree of knowledge. The gnostic tradition in Christianity has a similar emphasis on the importance of the search for knowledge. Most versions of the Bible do, however, stress that Adam and Eve were ‘disobedient’ or ‘bad’ to take the ‘apple’ of knowledge. Ultimately however, what was needed was the biological, scientific understanding of why we were not ‘bad’; only that could lift the burden of guilt from humanity, and it is that rational understanding that we now have! You might be interested in the WTM’s FAQs about religion which explain that religion deserves praise for being a repository of extremely rare denial-free truth, containing all the truth about human life albeit from a pre-scientific view.

The result of this conflict between our instinct and intellect was that we became psychologically defensive, angry, alienated and egocentric – the upset state we refer to as the human condition. But now that we can explain and understand this conflict, all those insecure, defensive behaviours are obsoleted, brought to an end, and we free ourselves from the human condition. Hi Robert, Part 1 of THE Interview explains that war and conflict aren’t the result of men having animal “must-reproduce-their-genes-promoting testosterone” instincts but rather the result of a universal psychosis, caused by the clash between our instinct and intellect. And, significantly, since a psychosis can be healed with understanding, human behaviour is not unchangeable or immutable – a revelation that transforms the human race. Yes at last Janet we have the first-principle biological explanation for why we are all one and importantly why we haven’t been. Jeremy Griffith explains all humans are born with all-loving moral instincts but now variously suffer from a psychosis due to the human condition caused by the conscious mind’s necessary search for knowledge. So we can finally understand WHY as a species we have become so angry, egocentric and alienated. But now we can explain and understand this necessary divisiveness, all those destructive behaviours are obsoleted, and we free ourselves from the human condition. That’s great you are finding FREEDOM so informative and intriguing Ian! This critical new science does take some consideration and application to fully grasp so it is wonderful you are doing that by working your way through FREEDOM. And yes we agree this is where it’s at to heal the world! We wanted to include our FAQ 1.9 ‘Should people be sceptical’ as it explains, the astonishing claims being made about Jeremy Griffith’s work do warrant initial scepticism however they all withstand scrutiny as what he presents is 100% logic. People find once they begin exploring the explanation the more they do the more they realise the claims are actually true. So what initially appear to be off-putting hubristic claims, in time they become appreciated for their forthright honesty in indicating where the solution to our problems lies — as the commendations Jeremy’s work has received from eminent scientists and thinkers attest (see here on our homepage).
