   While Eastern philosophies (and indeed, religions around the world) contain all manner of truths about human life, it is all from a pre-scientific view. Ultimately we needed to find the scientific explanation for why when the universal ideals are to be loving, cooperative and selfless are we so angry, competitive and selfish.    It also needs to be understood that there have been thousands of years of different techniques for calming, restraining, repressing, and even ‘transcending our ego’ or transcending our psychologically upset human condition which have been very valuable in managing our upset, but none of them have brought an end to the upset state of the human condition—it’s still rampant everywhere. The reason is because they don’t solve the human condition. They don’t deal with the source of our species’ corrupted condition and bring relieving understanding to it. Thank you very much Betty. Yes, understanding the human condition will become the centre of all human study – it is absolutely central to everything about our species. And as Jeremy Griffith explains our competitive and aggressive behaviour is not due to us having savage instincts, or being wrenched out of our primitive savage existence, rather it is due to us having a conscious-mind-based, psychologically troubled condition that can be healed through understanding the biological origins of that troubled, guilt-stricken, conscious-mind-based state.

The following is a passage from Part 3 of Jeremy Griffith’s book Transform Your Life that is on point: “We are rational creatures, and so when all the logic points to there being only one response we can make, namely the human-condition-resolved, upset-obsoleted, transformed new way of living, then that is the response the human race has to take. No revolution dogmatically, and even physically, imposed upon us by others, as has pretty much been the case with revolutions in the past, just a peaceful revolution through the power of logic, knowledge, understanding—the great ‘revolution of the mind’ that W.B. Yeats, and Sir Bob, yearned for. Of course, while it is the power of the logic, the rationale, that makes the new transformed way of living irresistible, the adoption of this way of living is also made irresistible by the absolutely wonderful transforming effect it has on people. Indeed, before long those still living in the old embattled, have-to-prove-your-worth, or deluded, do-good-to-feel-good pseudo idealistic ways of living will feel like they have been caught wearing last year’s fashions! There is such a stark difference between the free, authentic, expansive, enthralled-with-life, transformed existence and the old embattled existence, where your mind is narrowly focused and preoccupied working all the angles every second of every day, defensively seeking validation and reinforcement, that those living in the old ways will seem like a different species. Compared to the new expansive, all-exciting, free, transformed state, those still stuck in the old embattled paradigm will be like sad, forgotten ghosts trapped in an obsoleted state.”

   Jeremy Griffith explains all humans are born with all-loving, moral instincts but we now suffer from a universal psychosis caused by the clash between our instinct and intellect – this is the source of our ‘good and evil’ conflicted behaviour. We became psychologically upset and alienated from our original selfless state because of our conscious mind’s necessary, and indeed heroic, search for knowledge.

   While that search for knowledge has been underway, humans have had to make “social agreements” as a way of controlling and moderating our angry, egocentric and alienated behaviour. The purpose of religion, for example, was to be the custodian of the ideal state while the search for liberating knowledge was underway.

Thank you very much for your comment Kathleen. We do think it is important to realise that all humans suffer from the psychologically upset state of the human condition, not just an overtly “devisive” few. The issue of whether we are fundamentally good or bad has been the most unbearably depressing and terrifying of subjects to face, and until that question could be answered, which it has in THE Interview, we have lived with a feeling of unworthiness, insecurity, shame and guilt and, necessarily, in almost total denial of the human condition, so it does take a while to fully appreciate the extent of our denial.

   Yes, the truth will set you free. But while great wisdom can be found in some spiritual teaching, ultimately our thinking mind needed understanding—specifically, scientific understanding of why when the ideals are to be loving and selfless are we so competitive and selfish? This is what Jeremy Griffith’s treatise does and why it is heralded as the breakthrough that can save the world.

   THE Interview does explain that all humans are born with an all-loving and compassionate soul or instinctive self from which our ‘spirituality’ is sourced, but that we became alienated from that state because of the conscious mind’s necessary search for knowledge. We recommend re-watching the presentation, especially Part 3 ‘How did we humans acquire our instinctive cooperative and loving moral conscience?’. Also FAQ 1.26 ‘What is soul’ discusses the depth of sensitivity this pure and truly moral part of ourselves can access, and we also recommend FAQ 6.7 ‘How can a scientific explanation ever hope to account for and encompass the great ‘spiritual’ dimension we know exists in life?’

Yes, Jeremy Griffith’s treatise establishes the fundamental goodness of all humans and brings compassionate and thus safe understanding to ALL of human behaviour which allows us to love ourselves and each other. Having found this key explanation does not mean that the search for knowledge now ends however, instead, as Jeremy Griffith explains in paragraph 1136 of FREEDOM, being at last free of that fundamental insecurity, it can now progress in a healthy, truthful way: ‘Of course, the search for knowledge will continue, but not from a basis of dishonest denial, and with the key piece of knowledge we needed found of the explanation of the human condition, the priority for the immediate future will be—as will be explained in the next chapter—to take up the human-condition-reconciled Transformed Way of Living.’"

   As THE Interview explains all humans are born with all-loving moral instincts but now variously suffer from a psychosis due to the human condition caused by the conscious mind’s necessary search for knowledge. So we can at last understand WHY as a species we have become psychologically upset—so competitive and aggressive as to want to dominate and control others. We can also explain that all ‘races’ (ethnic groups) fall somewhere on the spectrum of either being more sheltered from humanity’s heroic battle to find knowledge, or more exposed to it, and so are either more innocent or more psychologically upset. We can see that at this point of time Caucasians fall somewhere in the middle, with more psychologically embattled races having ‘peaked’ earlier, and less psychologically embattled races yet to peak (see chapter 8:16E of Jeremy’s definitive book FREEDOM), however, the truth is that all humans are now part of the extremely upset stage of humanity, H. sapiens sapiens, and are therefore nowhere near as innocent as humans were some 2 million years ago when the battle of the human condition first emerged. So the more upset have been overthrowing the less upset since the human condition emerged. However, what is most important is that despite the differing levels of upset due to everyone’s different encounters with humanity’s heroic battle to find knowledge, we are all equally good. Now we can understand the human condition we can see that no person or race is superior or inferior. This desperately needed reconciling understanding of the relationship between races is further explained in Freedom Essay 28 and for a testimonial on the power of this information to end racism, we recommend watching/reading the presentation from Franklin Mukakanga, of Zambia, in Video/Freedom Essay 8.

Thank you, Gary. Yes, Maslow identified many of our important needs, but the greatest human need has always been to find understanding—ultimately, understanding of ourselves. Until we could explain why we humans were angry, egocentric and alienated, we were left with an unbearable insecurity about our worth. That insecurity drove us to seek reassurance and validation in countless ways, including many of the motivations Maslow identified. Once we can understand and defend our fundamentally good, though psychologically upset, condition, that deepest need is finally met, allowing us to live free from the burden of having to continually prove our worth!

   As Jeremy explains in As he explains in Part 4 of THE Interview “socialism, the new age movement, the politically correct movement, and all the other idealistic movements, were actually all false starts to a human-condition-free world because the upsetting battle to find knowledge, ultimately self-knowledge, the psychologically relieving understanding of why we are good and not bad, still had to be completed. In fact, while dogmatically insisting that everyone should be cooperative and loving could make you feel that you were doing good and be superficially psychologically very relieving, such insistence on ideal behaviour denied people the freedom they needed to be able to continue the all-important upsetting search for knowledge. These movements were pseudo idealistic movements that stifled and oppressed the search for the understanding of our corrupted condition that was needed to actually free us from that state." Yes. To use another metaphor - with the whole of the human race in support, science, had to, as it were, find all the pieces of the jigsaw that would make the explanation of the human condition possible — in particular the work of Watson and Crick on DNA, and what the discoveries of neuroscience can tell us about consciousness – at which point all that was needed to put all the pieces of the jigsaw together and reveal the full picture, which is what Jeremy Griffith has been done in THE Interview.

Yes, Jung was absolutely correct in identifying the importance of gaining understanding of our ‘psyche’; he was forever saying that ‘wholeness for humans depends on the ability to own their own shadow’. What is presented here, with Jeremy Griffith’s redeeming ‘instinct vs intellect’ explanation of the human condition, is what – finally – gives us the ability to own our own shadow. You might be interested in FAQ 1.47 which explains that because he was not able to recognise that we humans have a loving and cooperative past, Jung was not able to explain the human condition.

Yes, as THE Interview explains, the bonobos are extraordinarily loving and sensitive, and provide an almost unbearably poignant insight into our own species' past. The good news is that we as individuals, and humanity as a whole, can now return to that loving and cooperative state. Part 4 of THE Interview, titled ‘How does the psychological rehabilitation of the human race that the arrival of understanding of the human condition finally makes possible actually occur?’, explains that now that now that our goodness is biologically established we no longer have to behave insecurely and selfishly and can legitimately return to a selfless way of living. ‘Legitimately’ because we have the first principle science which liberates us to be honest about our conflicted upset state instead of denying or transcending it.

   Thanks for your comment Robert. The human condition is humanity’s psychologically upset state that arose because, during our species' necessary search for knowledge, we appeared to betray our cooperative and loving instincts. Unable to explain why that apparent betrayal was necessary, we lived with an undeserved sense of guilt. The significance of Jeremy Griffith’s explanation is that it removes that unjust condemnation by showing that what appeared to be “evil” was actually the unavoidable consequence of humanity’s heroic search for understanding.

   With regard to Alice in Wonderland, it is true that to children the adult world can seem confusing, irrational and almost surreal. Jeremy’s explanation is that children naturally struggle to make sense of a psychologically upset adult world until they too become caught up in it - see Freedom Essay 30: Resignation.

   The story of Eden is especially significant because it points to humanity’s original innocent, cooperative and loving state. Until the human condition could be explained, that innocent state seemed impossible to accept because human behaviour appeared far too selfish and destructive. But now that our divisive behaviour has been scientifically explained and defended, we can admit that our species really did begin in a cooperative and loving state.

   Respectfully, we think you’ve misunderstood the argument. What is presented in THE Interview is the opposite of feel-good, positive-thinking or utopian wishful thinking. It confronts the darkest aspects of human behaviour head-on and asks where they came from.

   If our selfish, violent and destructive behaviour is the result of a psychologically upset state that emerged during humanity’s evolutionary past—as THE Interview explains—then understanding the source of that upset is not rejecting reality, it is finally explaining it. The point isn’t to deny humanity’s dark side, but to understand why it exists. Only by bringing understanding to that “dark side” can it ultimately be healed.

   Now that our goodness is biologically established we no longer have to behave insecurely and selfishly and can legitimately return to a selfless way of living. ‘Legitimately’ because at last we have the first principle-based science which liberates us to be honest about our conflicted upset state instead of denying or transcending it. This is the rapidly transforming practical effect of being able to understand the human condition which is fully explained and illustrated on our Transformation page.

The human condition has been such a deeply, deeply tragic journey which has caused so much mental pain and anguish. What is so significant about Jeremy’s breakthrough explanation of the human condition is we no longer have to be burdened by the fundamental question of whether we are good or bad because that core goodness as individuals and as a species has been biologically established. We can understand humans’ psychological upset was the price humans had to pay for searching for knowledge and that the human story presents the greatest, most heroic story ever told. We can at last understand the source of our upset and trauma and bring great compassion and kindness to ourselves and others.

As with any new scientific breakthrough in history it will take time to gain mainstream acceptance, and from there break through the bastions of power in the world. However, once this information gets a foothold through enough people developing a deep appreciation and desire to support it, the selfless love and energy that will generate will solve our problems very quickly because, as THE Interview explains, instead of being selfishly preoccupied with power, fame, fortune and glory, all our energies will be freed to truly work together and focus on doing whatever it takes to end the suffering in all the corners of the world, see FAQ 1.40 ‘How can you hope to transform the world? — In particular, how are you going to change the behaviour of the rich and powerful?’.

   THE Interview is only a summary presentation, however in Part 1 Jeremy Griffith explains all humans are born with an instinctive self or soul that is perfectly aligned to a cooperative and selfless way of living and that humans’ upset (angry, egocentric and alienated) behaviour is not a product of savage animal instincts within us, but the result of a universal psychosis caused by the unavoidable clash between our instinct and intellect. So at last we can biologically understand what sin is and where it comes from, but also how we are not bad or ‘sinful’ for having for taking on the corrupting search for knowledge. Jeremy also explains that while we couldn’t admit that our selfish, aggressive behaviour was psychological in origin we had to come up with all sorts of theories to account for our ‘good and evil’-stricken condition, and the idea that we are born with selfish animal instincts or born ‘sinners’ is an ‘excuse’ people had to rely upon until we had the real defence for our condition. Part 2 also discusses that every religion begins with the recognition that we have departed from an original innocence and uses the story of Adam and Eve as an example. Jeremy explains it is a pre-scientific metaphor for the emergence of consciousness and its clash with our pre-established, cooperative loving instincts, resulting in humans becoming psychologically upset or ‘sinful’ or ‘evil’. However, significantly we can now understand, from scientific first principles, that ‘Adam and Eve’ were ‘good’ to search for knowledge, not bad or ‘evil’; we humans are actually the absolute heroes of the whole story! What THE Interview presents reconciles science and religion by bringing biological understanding to pre-scientific concepts (see our FAQs about religion).    Hi Briam, what Jeremy Griffith presents is the scientific explanation for why when the universal ideals are to be loving, cooperative and selfless are we so angry, competitive and selfish by the clarifying difference between the way the intellect and instincts work. There is no dogma or belief involved as what is presented is an accountable scientific, first principle-based, rational, testable understanding of the human condition, which has attracted the support of eminent scientists and thinkers around the world which people can explore on our Commendations Page.

   As Part 4 of THE Interview Jeremy explains until now leaving or transcending our competitiveness and just imposing cooperative behaviour wasn’t the solution. To quote, such movements “were actually all false starts to a human-condition-free world because the upsetting battle to find knowledge, ultimately self-knowledge, the psychologically relieving understanding of why we are good and not bad, still had to be completed. In fact, while dogmatically insisting that everyone should be cooperative and loving could make you feel that you were doing good and be superficially psychologically very relieving, such insistence on ideal behaviour denied people the freedom of expression and individualism they needed to be able to continue the all-important upsetting search for knowledge. These movements were pseudo idealistic movements that stifled and oppressed the search for the understanding of our corrupted condition that was needed to actually free us from that state. They were regressive, not progressive as they deluded themselves they were.” (This is further explained in FAQ 6.5 ‘‘Is this another new age, pseudo idealistic, superficial-treatment-of-psychosis type movement?’ and our FAQs about Politics.) Also in Jeremy Griffith’s book, Death by Dogma, he emphasises that while it is easy to identify with the ideal of everyone being cooperative and loving, the whole objective of the human journey was to find understanding of why humans have not been cooperative and loving and instead so divisively competitive and aggressive. That is the great riddle of the human condition that had to be explained. Now at last we can understand why we humans have been competitive, aggressive and selfish, and, most wonderfully of all, by revealing that reason, the need for that divisive behaviour is ended. Importantly, this understanding of why we became upset does not condone or sanction our destructive behaviour, rather, through bringing understanding to it, it gives us the power to ameliorate and thus subside and ultimately eliminate it, see our FAQ 1.38 ‘Does this condone ‘evil’ behaviour?’.

   THE Interview Jeremy also explains the key distinction between our selfless behaviour and cooperation seen in the animal and plant kingdom, is that humans have genuinely selfless instincts through the process of ‘love-indoctrination’. This is especially presented in Part 3 using the example of the extraordinarily cooperative and maternal bonobos, who have developed this process to a lesser degree. This is further discussed in FAQ 5.2 ‘How did we humans acquire our all-loving, unconditionally selfless moral conscience?/ What do bonobos tell us about our own evolutionary heritage?’. Alos, in his definitive book FREEDOM Jeremy explains that every species would try to develop as much love-indoctrinated integration as their circumstances permit, which can be seen in animals like dolphins and elephants, but how their physical and environmental situations have limited them from achieving that, meaning they still remain in the ‘animal condition’. So while some animals and plants appear to be cooperating, as Jeremy explains in FREEDOM chapter 4, this type of behaviour is actually a subtle form of selfishness, driven by the genetically selfish strategies of reciprocity (or kin selection). The organism is cooperating for a benefit—‘if you scratch my back I’ll scratch yours’—it is reciprocal so it’s ultimately still selfish. As Jeremy explains further in his Freedom Essay 25 ‘The Truthful Biology’ (which summarises the biology presented in FREEDOM) the nature of genes means that selfishness is normally the order of the day: “each sexually reproducing individual normally has to ensure the reproduction of its own genes, which means sexually reproducing individuals cannot normally develop the ability to behave unconditionally selflessly towards other sexually reproducing individuals—which, as has been explained, is what full cooperation and thus complete integration requires. Certainly sexually reproducing individuals can develop conditionally selfless behaviour towards other sexually reproducing individuals. Situations of reciprocity can develop where one sexually reproducing individual selflessly helps another on the proviso that they are selflessly helped in return, which, in effect, means both parties are still selfishly benefiting. So sexually reproducing individuals can develop reciprocity because it is, in essence, still selfish behaviour: it doesn’t give away an advantage to other sexually reproducing individuals and, therefore, doesn’t compromise the reproductive chances of the sexually reproducing individual practising the behaviour.” This essay then explains our human moral instincts are not driven by reciprocity but rather developed through the love-indoctrination process that produced genuinely selfless or altruistic instincts in humans, which is also mentioned in THE Interview. We hope you find this reply and these links helpful Briam.

As is mentioned in THE Interview and as our FAQ 1.16 ‘Why can’t I understand this’ explains, the very nature of the human condition means discussion of it can be initially difficult to access. This is because historically the issue of whether we are fundamentally good or bad has been the most terrifying of all subjects to face, and so we have necessarily lived in almost total denial of it, which means our minds can initially struggle to hear and absorb discussion about it. Wonderfully, however, this ‘deaf effect’ can be overcome with patient perseverance and everyone can access this most amazing of all gifts of understanding the human condition! Also, you may find our FAQ 1.3 helpful as it presents a very brief summary of the key ‘instinct vs intellect’ concept. Essentially, when we humans developed a conscious mind some 2 million years ago, a battle unavoidably developed between it and our already established instincts. The result of this conflict between our instinct and intellect was that we became psychologically defensive, angry, alienated and egocentric — the upset state we refer to as the human condition. But now that we can explain and understand this conflict, all those insecure, defensive behaviours are obsoleted, brought to an end, and we free ourselves from the human condition.

   Hi Tracey, thank you for your good question. In THE Interview biologist Jeremy Griffith explains that while all humans are born with loving, cooperative moral instincts, we all now suffer to varying degrees from the psychologically upset state that he identifies as the human condition. This upset can express itself through ideological extremism, war and criminality as these are all symptoms of our insecure, human condition afflicted state, which in the extreme produces psychopathic behaviour. Importantly, this explanation doesn’t excuse or condone such behaviour rather, by compassionately explaining the source of it, it gives us, for the first time, the ability to genuinely ameliorate and ultimately eliminate it. We particularly recommend reading our FAQ 1.38, ‘Aren’t some people just born psychopathic, or even “evil”?’, and FAQ 1.40 ‘Aren’t the problems of the world too overwhelming to ever be fixed? / Isn’t it too late to save the world? / How can you hope to transform the world? — In particular, how are you going to change the behaviour of the rich and powerful? / How are you going to reach the bastions of power? / Won’t the greedy and power-hungry simply ignore this?’. FAQ 1.40 also explains that while this transformation initially has a slow start, because of the historic resistance people have to hearing discussion of the previously off-limits subject of the human condition (see FAQ 1.16 ‘Why can’t I understand these ideas?’), humanity’s uptake of the explanation of the human condition has a fast finish as the selflessness it liberates in people will not only quickly solve all the problems on the planet, including helping those who “don’t get it”, but the excitement and joy it brings means everyone will want to get on board as quickly as they can. As Jeremy explains in his main book FREEDOM (in chapter 9:9): “Although this new world for humans, which FIX THE WORLD has been established to facilitate, will, as has been stated, have a slow beginning because humans initially find it difficult even taking in or ‘hearing’ discussion about the human condition, once FIX THE WORLD is discovered, word of it and what it offers every human and the world will spread like wildfire". 

   In terms of politics, as explained in FREEDOM and our FAQs on politics, Jeremy argues that both the political left and right have arisen as different responses to humanity’s psychologically upset condition. Neither side represents the ultimate solution because both developed within the context of the human condition itself. What is so significant about Jeremy Griffith’s treatise is it explains that all the ailments the world suffers from, like poverty, starvation, over population, environmental devastation, genocide, terrorism, mass displacement of peoples, starvation, runaway diseases, gross inequality, polarised politics, rampant corruption and other crimes, drug abuse, family breakdown, and epidemic levels of obesity, chronic anxiety, depression, unhappiness and loneliness, are all symptoms of a deeper problem. We are suggesting that to truly solve the world’s problems we need to address and fix the underlying issue responsible for these problems, which is the human condition – our corrupted, psychologically upset state. We recommend you watch THE Interview which explains ultimately to solve the human condition we needed to find the scientific explanation for why when the universal ideals are to be loving, cooperative and selfless are we so angry, competitive and selfish. Answering this question required finding the clarifying difference between the way the intellect and instincts work, and that is the great biological breakthrough Jeremy presents. While this biological understanding of the human condition really is the universal solution to all the problems we face, it does have a slow start-up phase. In this interview Jeremy Griffith explains the key biological distinction between humans and other animal species is that humans suffer from a conscious-mind-based, psychologically troubled human condition, not a genetic-opportunism-based, animal condition. Jeremy explains all humans are born with all-loving, moral instincts but we now suffer from a universal psychosis that came about when our intellect emerged and clashed with those instincts that could not understand our conscious mind’s necessary, and indeed heroic, search for knowledge; a search that, in effect, defied the rigid nature of instincts that had been honed through natural selection. So human behaviour isn’t driven by competitive, survival animal instincts, it is driven by this psychosis and, significantly, a psychosis is changeable because it can be healed through understanding. Jeremy also explains that while we couldn’t admit that our selfish, aggressive behaviour was psychological in origin we had to come up with all sorts of theories to account for our ‘good and evil’-stricken condition, and the idea that we are selfish because we have ‘savage-must kill in order to survive' animal instincts is the main an excuse we have had to rely upon until we had the real defence for our condition. 

   The biology of the human condition is absolutely fascinating and answers one of the great outstanding scientific questions. As Jeremy explains in Part 3 of THE Interview, “how we acquired our moral instincts has been one of the greatest mysteries in biology. The primatologist Richard Wrangham described it as ‘A question that has lain unsolved at the core of biology ever since Darwin’. And Darwin himself described it as the ‘one special difficulty’ with his concept of natural selection”. This is because in order to have an instinctive altruistic moral nature, it follows that our distant ape ancestors must have been cooperative and loving, not competitive and aggressive like other animals. But, since altruistic, unconditionally selfless genetic traits are self-eliminating, and therefore seemingly cannot develop in animals, that leaves the question of how could we humans have developed them? Jeremy explains in THE Interview, and in much greater detail in his main book FREEDOM, the answer was through nurturing or what he terms ‘love-indoctrination’. As Jeremy says at the start of chapter 5 of FREEDOM, “Our moral instinctive self or soul, the ‘voice’ or expression of which is our conscience, is a truly amazing phenomenon, for it provided the cooperative, unconditionally selfless love that created humanity”! This understanding of love-indoctrination is astonishingly interesting and central to the unique significance of Jeremy’s work, which is summarised in FAQ 5.2 ‘How did we humans acquire our all-loving, unconditionally selfless moral conscience?’. This critical new science presents a huge paradigm shift in our thinking so we hope you find these links helpful Chris.
