What a lovely incorporation of the Garden of Eden into a rational explanation of the human condition. Thank you

WTM Admin

It is wonderful see people discover this information Jude! As you say, we can now understand the Garden of Eden story is a metaphor to describe our condition. However, now with the benefit of science we can now bring clarifying, first-principle biological explanation to our so-called ‘good and evil’-afflicted human condition and why we had to depart from our original innocence. Jeremy’s work simply brings biological understanding to religion’s pre-scientific descriptions of our condition. You might be interested in our FAQs about religion.

The magnitude of this biological breakthrough is just absolutely breathtaking! I am just so grateful for finally finding some real answers about us humans.

Very interesting and thought provoking, will be getting a copy of this book 😁

John

I think most of what your thinking is based on a false assumption. People mostly are kind, though full loving beings. The basis of your argument is the human condition is terrible. It’s not. Some folks might , for various reasons, behave poorly. That does not apply to the whole of humanity. Your application of the behavior of some to us all is a big mistake. Scientific explanation… oft.

WTM Admin

Thank you for your thoughts John. The basis of understanding the human condition is that humans are the most wonderful, heroic beings possible! With that overarching understanding however, it is possible to admit that we have been terribly, selfish, egocentric and alienated. You might be interested in FAQ 1.33, where Jeremy explains that, “Basically we would talk about all manner of positive achievements without ever mentioning the negative of how horrendously corrupted and horrendously practising of denial of that truth and thus how horrendously alienated/psychotic/split from our true all-loving and all-sensitive instinctive self or soul we actually were. There was this massive metaphorical elephant in the room, our extremely alienated condition, that no one was confronting or admitting.”

Pamela Kenney

Thank you for the clarity!

Zodwa Linda

Dear Craig and Jeremy, thank you for the interview. Jeremy’s insight on what he calls human condition is truly amazing. Indeed it does not seem to be a new discovery but human ability that was neither promoted nor acknowledged. The fact that Jeremy view on human condition is morally founded and morally sound, gives me hope that this movement could bring a true liberation, freedom and breakthrough on this subject of human condition (which I call it human suffering). Well I am hoping for the best to get more people on the same wavelength with Jeremy’s reasoning about the human condition. People who will want to change their life through this simple strategy which may seem difficult to modify humans. Our human psychology has long waited to face this natural truth. This interviews speaks close to my Christian beliefs that requires a believer to transform the mind so that he or she can / may understand what the perfect will of God is for himself and everything called by his name and under him. I guess what is presented by Jeremy in this interview, is one of the ways to return to Adam’s pre-sinning state. I would like to get the copy of Jeremy’s book titled “Freedom” so that I can get more of his thoughts and views. Thank you.

David Raphael

watching this interview has put into words perfectly many deeply hidden truths which having been raised in a highly dysfunctional family and then subjected to Catholic parochial education, have always had a large yet highly veiled presence in my life. Of course the mind of a child can’t comprehend these things so one tends to bury the urge to pursue the truths behind those veiled WRONGS preached as rights. My instincts have always driven me towards pointing out what I feel is our talent or maybe gift from the great spirit and that, I believe, is our inherent knowledge of what is right and what is wrong. Being a person with this belief system is of course not an easy road and leaves one branded with many titles and epithets. However it is wonderfully enlightening to hear this put into such simple terms and immensely encouraging to find that a movement is building to advance these discoveries about humanity

WTM Admin

Hi David, yes, understanding of the human condition brings such incredible relief to everyone, whatever their particular experience of the human condition has been, and as you say, the growing momentum is so important and exciting.     You may have already read through the following material, but if not, we thought you might be interested in reading about our precious-beyond-belief moral conscience, which we can now understand and admit is our instinctive self, in Freedom Essay 21, or chapter 5 of Jeremy’s definitive book FREEDOM. And Integrative Meaning, which is what we have termed ‘God’, which you have referred to as ‘the great spirit’, and which our loving, moral instincts are in accord with, will be a subject that is very important to you too – see Freedom Essay 23 or chapter 4 of FREEDOM. Jeremy also writes extensively about religion (see our FAQs about religion), and demystifies it through biological understanding.     You can also see that growing momentum in the exciting discussion taking place in our Facebook Group which you can join here. And lastly, you might also like to register for our live events with Jeremy which is a wonderful way to continue to learn about the understandings.

Thank you so much. Confirms my life long beliefs. Hope this spreads far and wide.

Justine Scort

Wonderful understanding and explanation. The human condition is within our own control and this is the key.

Rajendra Tayya

Generically, whereas biology is experimental, psychology is observational and both modes of enquiry are of equal weighting - analogous to measuring and counting in physics.

WTM Admin

Thanks for your comment Rajendra. It turns out that the human condition is the unlocking point for so much enquiry that has been stalled by having to live in denial of it. And so in solving the human condition, many previously disparate fields of enquiry, such as biology and psychology are now joined seamlessly. We can now understand how biology, specifically the instinct vs intellect clash, created our psychologically upset angry, egocentric and alienated psychology.

Jenny Coverdale

Thoroughly enjoyable. Thank you.

Diane Lindsey

Fascinating!

John Carpenter

I very much enjoyed the interview. I have almost finished writing a book of my own which in essence deals with the instinct versus intellect issue. I refer to it as ego versus spirit. All of the great religions have recognized this split as the main cause of human problems. Christians call it sin, Buddhists call it suffering and many Eastern religions describe as a veil of Maya or illusion. They all agree that the solution is to heal the split (salvation, liberation, enlightenment). Others try to heal the split through meditation. It is obvious to me that the ego is winning the battle when looks at the problems in our world. I have created another method that uses the awesome power of the mind to self analyze our programming and learn to transcend the ego and connect with spirit. This interview served to reinforce what I already know and has given me confidence that I am on the right track. Thank You

WTM Admin

While Buddhism and other religions contain all manner of truths about human life, it is all from a pre-scientific view. Ultimately we needed to find the scientific explanation for why when the universal ideals are to be loving, cooperative and selfless are we so angry, competitive and selfish. Answering this question required finding the clarifying difference between the way the intellect and instincts work, and that is the great biological breakthrough Jeremy presents in THE Interview and his book FREEDOM. We suggest FAQ 1.13 ‘Is this original or new?’ which explains the unique significance of Jeremy Griffith’s work. It also needs to be understood that there have been thousands of years of different techniques for calming, restraining, repressing, and even 'transcending our ego’ or transcending our psychologically upset human condition which have been very valuable in managing our upset, but none of them have brought an end to the upset state of the human condition—it’s still rampant everywhere. The reason is because they don’t solve the human condition. They don’t deal with the source of our species’ corrupted condition and bring relieving understanding to it. This is what Jeremy Griffith’s treatise does and why it is heralded as the biological breakthrough that can save the world. See FAQ 6.5 Is this just another self-help, New Age, pseudo idealistic, superficial-treatment-of-psychosis type movement?

Michele Harps

Enlightening!

👌

Caroline

Read the power of now. If that resonates, you’re ready to begin the road to consciousness.

WTM Admin

In Part 3 of THE Interview, Jeremy explains that our human instincts are loving and cooperative – that is our natural state; and in Part 4, it is explained how, with the human condition now solved, all humans will be able to return to that state, but with understanding, in a fully conscious way. Writers like Tolle simply advocate you just stop thinking, ignore thoughts about the past and future and just focus on the present moment, but that’s an abandonment of the fundamental responsibility of having a conscious, thinking mind! You can read more about these ‘false starts’ in Freedom Essay 33, which includes a discussion of Tolle’s work; and FAQ 6.5 which explains the difference between the WTM and pseudo-idealistic movements (in addition to the aforementioned Part 4 of THE Interview).

You raise some order of hope understanding the human condition; raising one-self to a level of consciousness and better our own behaviour. Awesome; Nga mihi.

Our bad behavior is due to sin and the rejecting of our savior Jesus Christ. He gave us his commandments and we aren’t animals as you say. We are made in the image of God our creator. Man continues to think he knows better than God and comes up with flawed explanations as this is.

VERY GOOD

Jan Ji

You have really done it: reconciled science and religion, LOL. You’re mostly right as any a posteriori would tend to be. I could have explained the same thing from a purely religious perspective without regard to science because I don’t dismiss religion as superstition, misunderstanding, or delusion. The language of religion is mythic, poetic, metaphorical one. The language of science is prosaic, literal, you have introduced a psychological element and instantly have created a scientific religion. There is value in what you say-- there is just more to it that science can’t encompass. One can accomplish the same thing by a rational consideration of religion.

WTM Admin

As you rightly recognise, religions do contain all manner of truths about human life from a pre-scientific view. However, what is unique about Jeremy’s work, and what finally brings about the reconciliation of science and religion, is that with the instinct vs intellect explanation of our condition, it provides the rational, biological, accountable explanation for our ‘fall’ from grace.     And so, Jeremy’s work doesn’t dismiss or contradict a belief in God or Christianity; in fact he has the greatest respect for the role Christ and Christianity has played in the world (see Freedom Essay 39). His work simply brings biological understanding to religion’s pre-scientific descriptions of our condition (see our FAQs about religion). For example, in THE Interview Jeremy includes the following passage from the story of Adam and Eve, explaining how it is a pre-scientific description of the ‘fall’: “The Biblical story of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden that Moses wrote so long ago in about 1,500 BC actually perfectly describes the psychologically upsetting battle that emerged between our instincts and conscious intellect. It says Adam and Eve/we humans took the ‘fruit’ (Genesis 3:3) ‘from the tree of knowledge’ (Gen. 2:9, 17) and were ‘disobedient’ (the term widely used in descriptions of Gen. 3). In other words, we developed a conscious mind and free will. But in that pre-scientific story it says Adam and Eve then became ‘evil’ (Gen. 3:22) perpetrators of ‘sin’ (Gen. 4:7) because they became angry, egocentric and alienated, and as a result Moses said they were ‘banished…from the Garden of Eden’ (Gen. 3:23) state of cooperative and loving innocence.” With the benefit of science, thankfully we can now explain that they, we humans, weren’t bad at all; in fact, we are the heroes of the story of life on Earth! (Note that Jeremy refers the audience to the full explanation in chapter 4 of his book FREEDOM.)     Again, whilst religion had to rely on metaphor to describe our condition, with the benefit of science we can now bring clarifying, first-principle biological explanation to our so-called ‘good and evil’-afflicted human condition and why we had to depart from our original innocence. And most importantly, it is only this rational, biological, accountable explanation for why, when the universal ideals are to be loving, cooperative and selfless are we so angry, competitive and selfish, that brings an end to that divisive condition.     You might be interested in FAQ 6.7 which is about whether a scientific explanation can ever encompass the so-called ‘spiritual’ element of life.

Understanding one’s self is crucial to understanding others. Be compassionate be kind and take care. This book is a breakthrough read, open your eyes to Jeremy Griffith’s point of view. You may find he echos your own thoughts too.

Billie

We need this. It feels like there is no hope for mankind. All good is being extinguished while greed and darkness sweep across the globe like a deadly veil. Maybe this can bring some light back. Thank you for your effort and time.

Senaratne

Excellent book which teaches day to day life

Nick

Sounds pretty grandiose

WTM Admin

Thanks for your feedback, Nick. As our FAQ 1.9 ‘Should people be sceptical’ explains, the astonishing claims being made about Jeremy Griffith’s work do warrant initial scepticism however they all withstand scrutiny as what he presents is 100% logic. People find once they begin exploring the explanation the more they do the more they realise the claims are actually true, and in time become appreciated for their forthright honesty in indicating where the solution to our problems lies — as the commendations Jeremy’s work has received from eminent scientists and thinkers attest. So we encourage you to watch THE Interview and judge for yourself! You might also like to register for our live events with Jeremy which is a wonderful way to learn about the understandings.

Loes Bakels

We are still mostly uaware of what the conflict is. Developing our consious state is what Sadghuru is trying to teach us too, this wonderfull message is from the same source!

WTM Admin

To understand what the conflict is we needed to scientifically explain why when the universal ideals are to be loving, cooperative and selfless are we so angry, competitive and selfish. Answering this question required finding the clarifying difference between the way the intellect and instincts work, and that is the great biological breakthrough Jeremy Griffith presents in THE Interview and his book FREEDOM. What Jeremy is putting forward is that for there to be a fundamental change in our human situation we had to understand the human condition – humans’ capacity for good and evil – from a biological perspective.     Also, thank you very much for your comment Loes, however we want to clarify there is a huge distinction between Jeremy’s work and that of Indian guru Sadhguru. There have been thousands of years of different techniques for calming and restraining our psychologically upset human condition, which have been very valuable in managing our upset, but none of them have brought an end to the upset state of the human condition—it’s still rampant everywhere—and the reason is because they don’t deal with the source of our species’ corrupted condition and biologically establish our fundamental goodness as a species which Jeremy has done. You can read more about the difference between Jeremy’s work and new age, pseudo idealistic movements in FAQ 6.5.

Pamela Parker

Enlightening....thank you. Pamela

Candice Dobie

Okay, what about hormonal influence? The question is, how do we tell the difference in our daily lives? And how do we deal with it in a healthy way?

WTM Admin

While hormones do affect our behaviour, and they have natural fluctuations, we suggest that the more you digest this explanation, the more you will realise that the overwhelmingly powerful influence on our behaviour is our psychologically insecure human condition. Coming out of that manic, insecure state, which is what understanding the human condition allows us to do, is what will have the most enormous affect on our behaviour (and in turn, our hormones, and all aspects of our tortured biology, will return to a calm state), see FAQ 1.29 ‘Is the human condition a biological or a psychological problem?’

Martha G. Canada

Thank you to both of you Jeremy and Craig for the opportunity to listening to this enlighten, thoughtful enquiry about the human condition. It encourage us to consciously exam and question are own behavior which sometimes is very difficult to do. Do think that individual, as well as a collective effort is needed to bring an understanding to heal our human condition and this interview is a great starting point. Brilliant!

Trevor Swistchew

It is logical to think the Earth is Intelligent. One only has to look at the diversity in Nature and it is rational to think that all the varying life forms have a source and that source operates on the principle of Intelligent Design. Even if you know nothing about science the world is a wonder for those who look closely.

WTM Admin

In THE Interview Jeremy Griffith refers to the Negative-Entropy-driven integrative meaning of existence, which he explains in depth in his definitive book FREEDOM, chapter 4 (see also FAQ 5.3 ‘What is the meaning of life? / What is the Integrative Meaning of existence? / What is God?’). In chapter 4:3 of FREEDOM, Jeremy also explains how the idea of Intelligent Design grew out of a need to counter mechanistic science’s denial of this integrative process, however, ultimately, through its reliance on divine intervention, Intelligent Design is unscientific. With the explanation of the human condition, however, it is now possible for science to recognise that integration drives the development of matter, including the advent of ‘life’ (again see FAQ 5.3). Jeremy explains in his books that indeed the word ‘development’ will come to replace the word ‘evolution’ in biology because evolution can be, and has been, misrepresented as meaning change is undirected, meaningless and random. This understanding reconciles science and religion.

Joyce white

This was a very eye opening truth filling interview. It was just what my aching heart needed to hear. Thank you.

Rod Dowdle

I found this interview enlightening and yet it left me with a sense of foreboding in respect to the survival of the human species. I am able to appreciate its content because I am fortunate enough to have acquired an average education which permits me to understand the significance of this learning ! Am I wrong to suspect most people do not have the tools of thought necessary to create change? All respect to the author 👍🏻✌️

WTM Admin

Thank you very much for your comment Rod. The fundamental explanation is very simple and not beyond the most basic of educations, however the very nature of the human condition means explanation of it can be initially difficult to access as it has been the most terrifying of subjects to face because it is the issue of whether we are fundamentally good or bad as a species, and we have necessarily lived in almost total denial of it. We suggest looking at Video/Freedom Essay 1 titled ‘Your block to the most wonderful of all gifts’ where Jeremy Griffith explains this initial ‘deaf effect’ and how to overcome it, which is also summarised in FAQ 1.16. So take heart Rod, not only does everyone have the mental tools to appreciate and support this, but as the WTM is rapidly gaining more and more support as you can see from the excitement and relief in our ecstatic responses and our over 50 global WTM Centres on our homepage! You can also see that growing momentum in the exciting discussion taking place in our Facebook Group which you can join here. With the energy and selfless love understanding the human condition generates those peoples who are impoverished and don’t have access to basic education will be genuinely helped in every sense. As THE Interview explains, instead of being selfishly preoccupied with power, fame, fortune and glory, all our energies will be freed to truly work together and focus on doing whatever it takes to end the suffering in all the corners of the world, see FAQ 1.6 ‘Why understanding solves everything’.

Marie currie

I’m fascinated by this subject still reading the free online book thank you for this much needed information

Frank O'Meara

As an Australian - with all due respect to Clive James I call myself “The Other Kid from Kogarah” - I could not ignore this interview. Clear, convincing food for thought, but a pipe-dream nonetheless. My doctoral studies were in Theology, and I was a professor in a Catholic university in Winooski, Vermont. Jeremy, clearly a nice bloke, overlooks the permanent, innate selfishness in all of us - which, interestingly he recogizes in the apparent selflessness of a mother towards her newborn child (her unconscious need to perpetuate her own genes). Unfortunately, we have little chance of becoming bonobos. The author mentions without comment “The Fall”, and uses the word God, but never explores the religious implications of his thesis.

WTM Admin

Thank you for taking the time to consider Jeremy Griffith’s work Frank. We disagree that Jeremy overlooks human selfishness. What he does is explain that innate genetic selfishness is the norm in the animal kingdom, and that it is the most common excuse for our own selfishness. However, what he explains is that through the nurturing based love-indoctrination process (which as you say, begins with maternalism, which is genetically selfish behaviour), our ancestors developed altruistic, moral instincts (see FAQ 5.2). The extraordinarily nurturing bonobos demonstrate this transition from selfish instinctive behaviour to the beginning of genuine love, and the fossil record evidences that this is a period that our ancestors also went through — see Freedom Essay 22. Having explained that our selfish behaviour is not due to selfish instincts, Jeremy explains that the real explanation is that our selfishness is the result of a psychosis due to a psychologically upsetting clash between those instincts and our emerging conscious mind (see FAQ 1.29 ‘Is the human condition a biological or a psychological problem?’).     Interestingly Jeremy’s work doesn’t contradict a belief in God or Christianity. It simply brings biological understanding to all those pre-scientific concepts (see our FAQs about religion). So although this is science, it is based on a Godly nature in the sense of recognising, like all the great religions do, that we humans once lived in a pre-human-condition-afflicted state of original innocence where we were perfectly instinctively orientated to the cooperative, selfless, loving, ‘Godly’ ideals of life; ‘God’ being explained in chapter 4 of FREEDOM as being the integrative meaning of life. (See also FAQ 6.3 ‘Does this undermine religion/God’.) You are right this is only briefly mentioned in this summary presentation but Jeremy does refer the audience to the full explanation in chapter 4, however THE Interview does include the following passage from the story of Adam and Eve, which explains how it is a pre-scentific description of the ‘fall’: “The Biblical story of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden that Moses wrote so long ago in about 1,500 BC actually perfectly describes the psychologically upsetting battle that emerged between our instincts and conscious intellect. Whilst religion had to rely on metaphor to describe our condition, with the benefit of science we can now bring clarifying, first-principle biological explanation to our so-called ‘good and evil’-afflicted human condition and why we had to depart from our original innocence. The Physicist Charles H. Townes summed up this ultimate reconciliation of science and religion best when he wrote, “they [science and religion] both represent man’s efforts to understand his universe and must ultimately be dealing with the same substance. As we understand more in each realm, the two must grow together…converge they must.”

A very intellectual concept of the highest level for humans to achieve. This is a program that should be initiated and developed for all the elected officials. This should be a requirement that must be attended as a group consultation just as they do on many jobs when new organizational transforming requirements must be met. It would surely decrease or even eliminate the corruption and fanatical desire of control of others. Once everything finally settles with the American government’s current issues, it must be a law that each Congress member is educated on this concept in the hopes that it will encourage honesty and patriotism. Leaders conduct is very important and it could have a domino effect on other country leaders. No need to fight, just communicate on what others need to live better.

Watch my octopus teacher [2020 documentary]. Consciousness is clearly in all existence. Darwinism is a theory. Science is a question that questions always it’s own answers. Humans who lived peacefully lived in a pre government state. Government is that which tells the story that there is not enough. However it is not true abundance is true and together humans can create so much beauty

WTM Admin

Hi Ennma, regarding consciousness, you might be interested in FAQ 5.5 Aren’t other animals capable of conscious thought like humans? / How can you say humans are the only fully conscious animals?. Yes, humans do have a cooperative ancestry, but our ‘fall’ was not due to government, which is just a manifestation of our condition, not the cause of it. No, we suggest that the more you digest the intellect vs instinct explanation, the more you will realise that it does explain our current divisive state, and all aspects of human life.

OMG so much to digest...but makes a lot of sense and I especially like how the bible stories are explained as ways of defining the undefinable.....

Explanation of our human condition opens up an entirely new way of thinking about humans, which is exciting because at last we can define and make sense of life, but it presents a huge paradigm shift in how we view ourselves so there is a lot to digest as you say Anna. Part of that is being able to bring biological understanding to religious accounts of our condition, which means we can at last truly understand religion and reconcile it with science. In fact this understanding is so powerful it actually reconciles all the polarities of human life. To quote Jeremy’s book FREEDOM chapter 4: “Yes, the instinct vs intellect explanation of the human condition makes sense of and reconciles all the unresolved manifestations of the polarities of the human situation—‘good’ vs ‘evil’, idealism or ‘God’ vs human’s non-ideal existence, religion vs science, holism vs mechanism, altruism vs egotism, communism vs capitalism, conscience vs conscious, and so on—thus ameliorating or healing, and finally ending, the psychologically upset, divisive way we have been living!” Also see our FAQs about the reconciliation of science and religion here on our website.

This is truly revolutionary. And thank you for your dedication. I am troubled however with the infusion of religious ideology of any sort, including the belief in evaluation and philosophy. I am aware of the human condition despite my personal beliefs in intellectual design. This expansion is so simple and Species specific, it’s not only unnecessary but also disingenuous to infuse unproven theoretical assumptions into a topic of human biological and physiological conditions. I’m aware simple examples of and migratory patterns are necessary to demonstrate the point. But comparisons to primates as an equal or advancement in this endeavor has very little contribution, with exception to indoctrination of competing beliefs. That is one of the goals this mind liberating program claims to want to achieve. I comprehended the need for the philosophic review but raise the notion to interspecies comparison on the fact, there is no relation on the intellectual level. My main concern and reason for this corresponded, is to address the thought for what I see is, your truest intention in this extreemly beneficial awareness, to research EVERY person capable of benefiting from the core principles of this teaching. I fear by infusing anything but the core values will fail in your stated intent and mission. Not all of us initially have the free thinking ability to descern for ourselves the core of this material in contradiction to already established perceptions and presuppositions. Most of my like minded believing companions WILL reject all of this beneficial information, due to the contradiction of their principles and beliefs. The break through to this basics but complex concept is hard enough, because of the biological and mental blocking aspects already in conflict. There needs to be an alternative teaching without religious or theoretical undertones. Something that will allow for awareness within one’s own beliefs, without infringement or accommodation of it. Hope this helps.

Thank you very much for your feedback Bruce and it is wonderful that you are appreciating just how accountable and powerful Jeremy Griffith’s ‘instinct vs intellect’ explanation is for our human condition. With regard to the religious references, it is true that people who have lived through faith can find demystification of religion hard to accept, however, as is explained in FAQ 1.15: “The study of the human condition is the study of humans’ capacity for acts of both so-called ‘good and evil’—of why, when the ideals are to be cooperative loving and selfless are we capable of incredible aggression and selfishness. This realm of inquiry is where science and religion overlap, so naturally in explaining the human condition the terms ‘good and evil’ and religious references will be used, and through scientific explanation, finally demystified and reconciled.”     While there may initially be resistance to these ideas because they do reach into areas that religions have traditionally catered for, in time it will be appreciated by everyone. We recommend reading FAQ 6.3 ‘Does this undermine religion?’ where it is explained that, “The great founding prophets of religion actually looked forward to the arrival of the reconciling understanding of the human condition—which means supporters of religion shouldn’t see Jeremy’s scientific demystification of religious teachings as blasphemy, but as religious fulfillment!”     We do hope you continue looking into the explanation of the human condition Bruce, and even help explain to people that this knowledge does not threaten their faith; it really is fabulous news for every human.

brilliant in one sense that the human conscience is what most starkly separates us from animals, but this has been known to spiritual traditions for millennia and science for decades. What doesn’t make sense is your explanation for the emergence of conscience. You say it was because of nurturing, but all animals nurture their young. Sorry, but you’ll have to provide a much better explanation to expect scientifically minded individuals to accept that.

WTM Admin

Until now how we acquired our moral conscience has been one of the great unanswered scientific questions. Primatologist Richard Wrangham described altruism as ‘A question that has lain unsolved at the core of biology ever since Darwin’, and Darwin himself described it as the ‘one special difficulty’ with his concept of natural selection. THE Interview summarises the science of the love-indoctrination process (so called because to an infant observer the mother’s maternalism appears to be selfless, and so when infancy can be prolonged – as it was in our ape ancestors – that infant becomes ‘indoctrinated’ or trained in behaving selflessly) but it is fully presented in Jeremy Griffith’s definitive book FREEDOM chapter 5 (and summarised in Freedom Essay 21). The requirements of a species that has free arms to hold a dependent infant as well as ideal nursery conditions are very difficult to find, which is why other species have not developed the love-indoctrination process.     Importantly, as THE Interview discusses, Jeremy’s work presents a new paradigm that dares to confront the historically unbearably confronting and off-limits subject of the human condition so there is a lot to absorb and consider. (Indeed, without the human condition now being defended, even the nurturing love-indoctrination process would be too confronting for most people to consider, which is why John Fiske’s formulation of the love-indoctrination process was allowed to die after he proposed it back in 1874, see FREEDOM chapters 6.3 and 6.4.) You might find FAQ 1.13 ‘Is this idea original or new? / How does biologist Jeremy Griffith’s ‘instinct vs intellect’ explanation of the human condition differ from other theories that recognise these elements?’ and also FAQ 1.20 ‘What is the scientific evidence for this instinct vs intellect explanation of the human condition’, helpful.

Interesting. Thank you

Your hypothesis that man is inherently good, while true for most, has a critical flaw. Science has shown that approx 1% of the human race is born without a conscience ie: psychopathic. While 1% is a low percentage, the actual number of individuals in a world of billions is enormous. Those individuals learn to mimic socially acceptable behavior, but they cannot feel regret, shame, remorse or empathy for others. Consequently, these individuals gravitate toward positions of authority such as government, law and corporate management. This is the sole explanation for the human condition. It began with the bankers, illustrated in early biblical writings. It is only psychopaths that desire war, theft, slavery, abuse and control over others. Unfortunately, man is very easily manipulated due to the vast majority being of a loving and trusting nature allowing those who would wield power for illicit reasons, to do so, unquestioningly - the so called divine right of kings. Each culture’s elite class institute social mechanism’s that create cognitive dissonance within the adherents keeping them dis and misinformed and consequently confused as to any objective difference between right and wrong devolving into a kind of moral relativism. this allows the ruling class to institute public rules and regulations that subjugate the populace without significant push back. The solution to the human condition is identifying psychopathic symptoms early and teach these individuals why it is critically important to learn to behave in ways that exhibit loving traits rather than purely egoic ones.

WTM Admin

THE Interview explains the human condition is the most fearful of subjects because it’s the issue of whether we are fundamentally good or bad, so until we could solve it with compassionate understanding, we had to find false excuses for our aggressive behaviour, primarily that our behaviour is driven by genetic selfishness or competitive animal-like instincts driving our behaviour, but also that there are some people who are born with a biomechanical or chemical flaws in their brain that accounts for their behaviour. However we suggest that apart from a tiny proportion of people who are born with a problem (much, much less than 1%; as Professor Prosen says in FAQ 1.34 “While we can expect instances of neurochemical/neurobiological based conditions, in my experience we can’t underestimate how much our psychology affects our biology”) all the aspects of human behaviour you speak of are symptoms of the human condition as presented in THE Interview.     For instance it is explained humans are born with all-loving moral instincts but we all now variously suffer from a psychosis due to a psychologically upsetting clash between those instincts and our emerging conscoius mind, and that in the extreme, that psychologically conflicted upset state produces psychopathic behaviour. See FAQ 1.38 ‘Aren’t some people just born psychopathic, or even ‘evil’? / How does this explanation rehabilitate people capable of ‘evil’ behaviour? / Does this condone ‘evil’ behaviour?’ Also FAQ 1.4 explains the solution of ‘How does being able to understand the human condition end the upset anger, egocentricity and alienation of the human condition?’.

Illuminating, exhilarating, hopeful, perhaps a bit too optimistic,a wonderful world to reach, but at my age of 98 I cannot have some doubts of the human condition changing much except for a minority of open minded Thinkers slowly over time enlarging and persuading more. The conditions that many grow up in combined with the damage to many in defects and terrible early life experiences will lead to Hitlers,Stalins,Maos, dictator Types and other brutal leaders, which will abort to a large extent the glowing possibilities outlined in this book.

WTM Admin

Great to have your interest Jacob! We suggest that the more you digest Jeremy Griffith’s ‘instinct vs intellect’ explanation, the more you will realise it is not overly optimistic but rather how realistic and accountable it is in getting to the source of all humanity’s psychological upset, which in the extreme, produces psychopathic behaviour, see FAQ 4.2 How does this rehabilitate what we historically term ‘evil’. You’re view of maternal love is diminishing and insulting. Your perspective is obviously male. I hope you are correct and men will embrace loving and nurturing. Heretofore it has been rejected as weak and feminine.

WTM Admin

We certainly respect people’s feedback but we would like to suggest that with further consideration you will see THE Interview in no way diminishes or insults maternal love, but rather gives it the recognition and honour it deserves. Yes it explains maternalism is a genetically selfish activity, but Jeremy Griffith is not saying maternalism accounts for the love human mothers feel for their children. In Part 3 of the THE Interview, he explains that it was because maternalism is a genetically selfish activity that love indoctrination was able to become established in our distant ancestors millions of years ago. However, and very importantly, once love indoctrination became established, mothers began to actively unconditionally love their children which lead to the development of our fully conscious minds. The extraordinarily nurturing bonobos demonstrate this transition from selfish instinctive behaviour to the beginning of genuine love.     THE Interview also explains it is ONLY NOW that we can explain the competitive, selfish and aggressive upset state of the human condition and thus understand why the present human-condition-afflicted human race hasn’t been able to nurture our infants as much as their instincts expect that it becomes safe to finally admit that nurturing is what made us human—that it was women’s maternal love that gave us our moral soul and created humanity! You can read more about love indoctrination in Freedom Essay 21 and chapter 5 of FREEDOM.     Also, the core premise of THE Interview is that ALL HUMANS ARE EQUALLY GOOD and equally heroic! We no longer have to just believe men and women are equal we can understand they are! To quote molecular biologist Dr Anna Fitzgerald from her commendation of this work: “because Griffith’s work establishes the equal worth or goodness of all humans we can now understand the different roles that men and women have traditionally played in the human journey and this is actually the unlocking point, this is what brings about deep empathy for each other, it heals the divide”—see Freedom Essay 9 titled ‘This is the real liberation of women’.

I’m sorry but I don’t think this gives us a very good handle on the human condition. No disputing that humans are a cooperative species but this will break down in a hostile environment. And the present world is very hostile indeed, due in no small part to our toxic conditioning. I don’t see how reading books like this will do anything to change that. Appealing to people’s intellect changes nothing. Individuals have to come to terms with their own drives, emotions and conditioning before society can change. I think even the biology is a bit one sided but the neuro-science of the human brain is not addressed at all.

WTM Admin

We suggest the more you absorb what is presented in THE Interview the more you will realise that it explains humans’ psychological upset is not a product of unchangeable survival animal instincts within us or environmental conditioning but the result of a universal psychosis, caused by the clash between our instinct and intellect. And, significantly, a psychosis is changeable as it can be healed through understanding so the solution is simple and all-powerful (see FAQ 1.4).     To finally be able to understand why when we have cooperative instincts as a species are we so competitive and selfish—gives us the ability, for the first time ever, to understand every aspect of human behaviour in ourselves and in everyone else! This explanation changes how you view humans, and most importantly yourself, literally overnight—and your behaviour will change naturally as a result, and just as quickly, see FAQ 1.5. At last we can understand our behaviour has been driven by a deep insecurity about our fundamental goodness so now that our goodness is biologically established we no longer have to behave insecurely and selfishly and can legitimately return to a selfless way of living. This is the rapidly transforming effect of being able to understand the human condition.     In terms of neuroscience, its worth including psychiastrist Professor Prosen’s words here about how powerful our psychology is in causing our behaviour, “While we can expect instances of neurochemical/neurobiological based conditions, in my experience we can’t underestimate how much our psychology affects our biology” (see FAQ 1.34). And in his Introduction to Jeremy’s definitive book FREEDOM, Professor Prosen included the following quote, “An opinion piece by Benjamin Y. Fong of the University of Chicago that was published in The New York Times in 2013 made this very point: ‘The real trouble with the Brain Initiative is…the instrumental approach…[such biological reduction is] intent on uncovering the organic “cause”…of mental problems…rather than looking into psychosocial factors…By humbly claiming ignorance about the “causes” of mental problems…neuroscientists unconsciously repress all that we know about the alienating, unequal, and dissatisfying world in which we live and the harmful effects it has on the psyche, thus unwittingly foreclosing’ the ability to ‘alleviate mental disorder’ (‘Bursting the Neuro-Utopian Bubble’, 11 Aug. 2013; see www.wtmsources.com/151>). So yes, neuroscience’s mechanistic approach is extremely limited. By contrast, Griffith’s understanding of our psychosis presents an understanding of, and solution to, the actual source of our damaged upset human condition and this is what is so unique and transforming about his work.
